As the week opens, “the mafia of the west” Top Dawg Entertainment reigns supreme with the top two spots on the Billboard Album chart with SZA’s “CTRL” and Kung Fu Kenny’s (Kendrick Lamar) “DAMN.” The lone female TDE artist, SZA, appears heartfelt and focused on her new 14 track debut album that secured features from fellow TDE members Kendrick Lamar and Isaiah Rashad along with other high profile names such as Travis Scott and James Fauntleroy. Infused with her pop-disco/R&B vibes, SZA dives deeply into her own insecurities and trials with love to reach her cult-like following.
Songs such as “Love Galore” and “Doves in the Wind” won’t be overlooked due to their featured artists, but I implore you to dive deeper into the tape. Tracks such as “20 Something” + “Normal Girl” offer the listener a sense of the psyche and lyrical range of SZA. Overall, Anthony “Top” Tiffith + SZA have created an aesthetic listening experience that leaves critics and fans alike yearning for more.
Responses for the tape have been wide reaching. The globe appears enthralled with her project and who wouldn’t be? The appeal of an artist who bares her soul to her fan-base hits her following at their core. Legends are behind her and the future bodes strong for the soulful artist. It appears SZA is even surprised with the positive responses. I mean, who wouldn’t be giddy if Diddy bumps your tape!
